No Need for Safe Haven laws in Saskatchewan – Justice Minister
No Safe Baby Haven
May 23, 2007
Don’t expect a baby safe haven law in Saskatchewan any time soon. This, even though a mother gave birth to a baby in the Prince Albert Wal-mart and another left her daughter on a door step in Saskatoon.
Justice Minister Frank Quennell doesn’t think there is a need for such a law because there are many services available to a young mother in trouble.
Plus if a newborn is handed to such a service a young mother won’t face prosecution.
Quennell insists the focus should be on educating young teens that services are there to help them if they find themselves in trouble.
Sarah Mills reporting.

Aghhh, there is people so?

We’d like to give you and your readers the facts about Baby Safe Haven laws in the States, especially here in the New England area.
47 states have passed and enacted Baby Safe Haven laws since 1999, and 99% of the US population lives in those states. Only Alaska, Nebraska and Hawaii don’t have them, yet. They are small population states.
Since the enactment of Baby Safe Haven laws a national foundation for education and awareness of the laws, The National Safe Haven Alliance, has tracked just over 1,000 newborns safely surrendered to safe havens in the USA.
In Massachusetts there have been 6 safely surrendered newborns in 30 months, since our law passed. Before our law passed, in the 54 months it took our legislature to pass and enact our law, there were 13 newborns abandoned, 6 died, and 4 came close to death due to various causes, and 3 were instances that were very similar to safe surrenderings because the surrounding states had Baby Safe Haven laws.
Just the record in the State of Massachusetts shows that Baby Safe Haven laws work.
Not only that, but all 6 of teh Mums who surrendered the babies gave the medical histories to the officials atthe time of the surrender, or shortly thereafter. 4 of the 6 also returned following the crisis they had at the time of delivery and signed full adoption contracts with full disclosure.
Hope this helps and don’t be afraid to check our web site:

Thank you Jean and Mike, I was thrilled to receive your comment. Clearly safe surrender practices are working.
